About The New Zealand Sheppard Family
Please sign in to see more. This website documents the descendants of Thomas Sheppard [1633-1680] and his wife Jane Fry [dates unknown] and follows nine generations of Sheppards to the children of Joseph Westby Hadfield Sheppard [1885-1954] and his wife Edith Croxton [1886- 1965]. Their five children were:
Aubrey Croxton Sheppard
John Croxton Sheppard
Marjorie Croxton Sheppard
Nancy Croxton Sheppard
Peter Charles Croxton Sheppard.
When I started researching the Sheppard family, I came across various spellings of the name such as SHIPPARD, SHEAPARD, SHEPPERD, SHEPHERD and SHEPPARD. Today the family use the SHEPPARD spelling. For ease and convenience I have used this spelling throughout this website.
Trawling through various websites, I came across a book - They came from Chilcompton written by Donald Clyde Sheppard in 1980 in which he gives a history of Edward Sheppard and his wife Sarah Chard Oram and their seven children, the first family of Sheppards to settle in New Zealand in the late 1860s and early 1870s. Donald Clyde Sheppard's book became the base for this website and using modern technology that was not available to him I was able to expand and in some cases correct his well researched work. I have used some of the information from his book for the stories section of this website.

Remember that when a family member passes away, they take a library of memories with them. It’s a genealogist’s duty to record them before that happens.
